Autumn air con installs: shorter lead times, calmer installers
Book air con in autumn and you get faster surveys, quieter installer calendars, and the winter heating benefit from day one. Here is why.
The last thing on most people’s mind in late September is air conditioning. That is exactly why now is the right time to book it.
The demand curve
UK air con enquiries spike in June and stay high through August. By late September they fall to about a third of the summer peak. That means:
- Surveys the same week rather than three weeks out.
- Installers who actually pick up the phone.
- Install dates within two to four weeks of the survey, not two to four months.
For most families that is the difference between having the unit fitted before Christmas or waiting until next April.
The install itself is easier in autumn
Every installer says the same thing. Autumn installs go faster because:
- Loft insulation is dry. Summer humidity makes pipework in a loft miserable.
- Outdoor work is manageable. 15 degrees and dry beats 32 degrees and sunny for anyone drilling through a wall.
- Refrigerant charging is more precise at moderate temperatures.
You will not see this on the quote, but it shows up in fewer callbacks and a cleaner first year.
Winter heating from day one
The forgotten benefit of an autumn install. Every modern fitted unit heats as well as cools. Fit it in October and you get the whole cool-mode benefit for one summer plus a full autumn and winter of cheaper heating on the rooms you actually use.
Households we talk to save £150 to £300 on their yearly gas bill by using air con to heat the living room and main bedroom through the shoulder months. Fit it in April and you miss the whole heating benefit for that year.
What autumn quotes usually look like
A single-room split in autumn is £1,800 to £2,700 fitted for a mid-range brand. Multi-split for three rooms lands at £5,500 to £8,000.
These are the same brackets as summer quotes - installers do not headline-discount for autumn. What they do is include things they would otherwise strip out to compete: a longer warranty registration, an initial service on the house, a decent brand of trim rather than the cheapest one.
When to hold off
If you have a listed building, a party wall issue, or a landlord who has not yet agreed, do not book yet. Sort the paperwork first. Air con quotes are only fixed prices once the installer has surveyed - if the site situation changes, you start over.
